  • Abstract: This report is originally based on the study carried out by the authors on the economic impacts of the Helsinki 2005 World Championship in athletics. The project was financed by the Ministry of Education and the report (Laakso et al., 2006) was published in Finnish by KIHU – Research Institute for Olympic Sports. The principal author of this English report is Heikki A. Loikkanen, who was nominated by the Minister of Education to act as an advisor of the initial project. This report is mainly a shorter version of the original report, but the argumentation especially in section 3 has been somewhat revised. The main conclusions are the same as before, but here more at- tention is paid to the evaluation of WC2005 from the view-point of its profitability for the private sector. We are grateful to KIHU – Research Institute for Olympic Sports for publishing this report in their series of publications in internet.
